This post commences occasional profiles of the talented teachers and staff at Incline High School. Since this is a new concept, it seems fitting to start with a new counselor, one that brings relevant training, a fresh millennial perspective, youthful energy and an engaging, hip humor to IHS. The students will find her approachable, and you will too: please meet and welcome Bethany Sheridan.
Bethany grew up in Ocean County, NJ and comes from a very active family of ultra marathon runners, triathletes, and basketball players. Her family encouraged her to stay active, though her chosen sports are swimming, surfing, running, and yoga. While she still misses surfing dearly, she has found a new joy in paddle boarding all around the Tahoe-Truckee area. Bethany has really discovered new meaning to the phrase “the mountains are calling” and is very excited to be joining the Incline High School family this year.
Bethany is passionate about travel and social justice, which led her on many volunteer trips all over the globe, where she helped children learn English, counseled children and adolescents in grief, and provided basic needs assistance to families. As a life long student, Bethany has also furthered her formal studies in Ireland, Egypt, and China, in order to learn more about holistic health, healing, and art history. Continuing on her academic path led Bethany to Reno, where she completed her PhD in counseling and educational psychology. Over the course of her academic program, Bethany fell in love with the mountains and decided to stay on the west coast with her partner and two dogs.
Throughout her professional career, Bethany has worked extensively with children and adolescents in both clinical and school settings. She began her career as a drug and alcohol counselor at an inpatient rehab, but found her true passion in working with children. Bethany is both a clinical professional counselor and a school counselor, and as such hopes to integrate her mental health expertise with her current position to best support students’ needs. Bethany knows high school is one of the most difficult times in life and is very grateful to have the opportunity to guide students through this unique chapter in their lives.
