New Engineering Program Offered to IHS Students

Mr. Adam Shoda is Incline High School’s new Aerospace Engineering teacher. Though new to IHS, he is a veteran to teaching engineering in the Washoe County school district. Prior to starting at IHS, Shoda taught aerospace engineering, senior engineering, and physical science for 7 years at Galena High School. Before that, he was a science teacher at Reno High School and is now teaching in his 20th year in WCSD.

The Incline Boosters Club, through the generosity of its donors, have helped to fund the new engineering program by purchasing classroom supplies. And, in some very good news, it was announced that the Incline Education Fund recently received a $50,000 grant to purchase some of the large equipment needed to help fund the first year of a four-year curriculum. In a show of community support, additional funds have been provided by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Tahoe-Nevada.

Mr. Shoda remarked “The supplies that the Boosters have purchased are invaluable. We would not be able to offer the Engineering Pathway without the support of the IEF and the Incline Boosters. The students have been working on 3D modeling, measurement/dimensioning and the engineering process. The growth of the students has been amazing. We already have several students becoming 3D printer experts, and I cannot imagine what the end of the year will hold. In addition to the engineering curriculum, I will be exposing the students to tools in order to increase their ability to build what they design.”

Funding a new state of the art high school program is expensive. The donations so far have helped to support the first year of a four year curriculum. An additional $50,000 is needed to buy robotics kits and more powerful engineering class computers for the department. Consider making a directed donation through the Incline Boosters Club or Incline Education Fund to support Engineering Literacy at Incline High School.
