November is a wonderful month to reflect and offer gratitude for all we’re
thankful for. We have a great deal to celebrate this weekend. Our fall sports
had some terrific outcomes. While our fall season has come to an end, there are
so many achievements to recognize and applaud.

First, we’d like to thank all the parents that helped to make each team’s season
special. Maybe you hosted a team dinner at your house, helped order spirit
packs, ran the entrance gate, or cooked amazing food to benefit your child’s
team. No coach can run a highly successful program without parent
participation and support. Please know that YOU made a difference and we’re
grateful.

Boys Soccer: Congratulations to these wonderful young men, also now known
as the Nevada 2022-23 State Champions!!!! This team has endured numerous
challenging obstacles this year and overcame them with grace.
Congratulations to 1st year Coach Peter Salazar, an I.H.S. alumni. Please
congratulate these young men if you see them around town or on campus.

Girls Soccer: Our girls fought a tough match to NLT in the playoffs and came up
short after an impressive season from a very young team. Thank you to Coach
Canino for helping our athletes to grow and develop into strong young women,
not just on the field, but in life.

Boys X – Country: Noah McMahon led the charge for the Highlanders
dominating by finishing over a minute before any of his competitors and placing
1st at the State Championship X-Country meet in Boulder City, NV. Noah
dominated all season and was well supported by his teammates, Josiah finishing
8th and Jesse, Blake and Elliot all setting PRs! The Highlanders finished 3rd as a
team. Congratulations to Noah McMahon for being a State Champion, and to
Coach McMahon for a terrific season.

Girls X-Country: Sophomore Kira Noble finished strong in 3rd, Kiki Kerrigan 6th,
and Addy LaForge 10th. Our Lady Highlanders finished 2nd in the State
Championship meet = State Runner Up. Such an impressive team!!!

Volleyball: This team is remarkable! Talk about overcoming difficulties and
tragedies, these young women never, ever gave up. They made it to the very
end going all five games in the championship to NLT. These young ladies
taught us all a great deal about kindness, resilience, friendship, and battling for
each other. Thank you to Coach Tacy and Casey for managing through all the
ups and downs.

What it’s all about… Most high school athletes will not go on to play at the
collegiate level. A little over 7% will go on to play a varsity sport in college and
less than 2% of high school athletes will go on to play at NCAA Division I schools.
So why do we celebrate and love high school sports? Participating in high
school athletics has long-lasting benefits. Music, theater, and WTP are just as
impactful.

Beyond the research, there is a community of athletes that is created. Lake
Tahoe is a small community, and while we may battle mightily with our friends
at North Lake Tahoe HS, once the match is over many of our students and their
students continue as dear friends. This was certainly on display this weekend.
Last week, we lost Ian Tippins, the beloved father of Eiley Tippins. Eiley
graduated this past June and was our female Athlete of the Year. She’s gone
on to play basketball at Point Loma University in San Diego. She was called
home this last week because of this unfortunate tragedy. Eiley attended the
soccer playoffs this weekend and the community wrapped around her with
love. This is what it’s all about.

How To Keep Informed

COVID

Please continue to use the District’s COVID self-screener (the screening tool) every day before leaving for school and be vigilant about handwashing and other measures to keep yourself safe throughout the day.  This past week we had 0 positive COVID cases 😊.  Although we are no longer excluding students and adults who may have been in close contact with an individual having COVID, in a school setting exposure is always a possibility.  If you or your child is experiencing any symptoms outlined on the self-screener, please follow those directions closely.  Additional guidance regarding what to do if you are ill or if you have been in close contact can be found here (this webpage).
